Antoine Chung 2nd place winner of the JPS Night Lights photo competition.

After a difficult judging session for the 2016 JPS Night Lights Photo Competition, the winning photograph was selected from more than 600 entries – a stunning shot of Emancipation Park in New Kingston, photographed using a drone. The grand prize photo, titled ‘City Lights’, was shot by Morris Taylor, winning him a new iPhone 6.

Second-place winner, Antoine Chung, was rewarded for capturing the picturesque scene of two ships docked in the Kingston Harbour, in a piece titled ‘Twin Ships’. Third place went to Edward Massias for his impactful photograph of a couple’s wedding at Strawberry Hill, romantically captioned, ‘When Mirrored Souls Collide’. The prize of a Samsung tablet and iView Suprapad were awarded, respectively.

Commenting on the quality and diversity of the entries, Director of Corporate Communications Winsome Callum noted that, “The competition is a wonderful example of how JPS not only contributes to the industry, commerce, and service sectors across the country, but also to the aesthetics of our environment. The entries highlight the beauty, vibrancy, and colour that our energy brings to the lives of Jamaicans from all walks of life.”

The panel of judges included Julian Dadag, professional photographer and head judge; along with JPS personnel Damian Whylie, head of technology & infrastructure; Winsome Callum, director of corporate communications; and Samuel Davis, head of government & regulatory affairs.

The judging consisted of two rounds. The first round evaluated technical areas such as focus, exposure, and lighting. The second round involved evaluation of the top entries based on creativity, composition, impact and genuineness or authenticity of the content.

The winning photos, along with more than 200 entries, are currently on display at a photo exhibition at the JPS corporate headquarters in New Kingston. The exhibition will be open until April 16. Photos can also be viewed on JPS Facebook page at or on the website at
